CrossFit 88 Kids Program FAQs:
WHAT WILL MY CHILD BE DOING?
CF88 CrossFit Kids teaches children fundamental movements, including squatting, throwing, jumping, lifting, pushing and pulling. We work to develop all basic physical skills in a safe and fun environment, while also teaching valuable life skills.
—Movement Prep/Warm Up— Both dynamic and static work to prep for the strength/skill portion of class.
—Focus/Skill work— Working on learning and improving specific movements.
—WOD— Workout Of the Day. This is where we put together our warm up, learned movements, and skill development into a short, intense workout. This is the backbone of CrossFit.
—The Game— KIDS only. Where we make adults jealous. Every class ends with a game with a fitness twist. Keeping exercise fun is fundamental to imprinting positive feelings regarding moving and working hard.
—Study Time— Only for CrossFit TEENS. Many studies have shown that teenagers’ brains are in an optimal state for processing information and problem solving immediately following exercise, so we ask that they bring their most difficult subject to class. Approximately 10 minutes of time will be allotted.
WILL MY CHILD BE LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS?
CrossFit KIDS: Definitely not at first, and possibly not for years. We keep all movements totally unloaded until children can Consistently show safe, accurate, strong movement patterns without weight. Even then, we load very gradually– adding a plastic PVC pipe in place of a barbell, for example. Older, more experienced children will potentially have the opportunity to use a barbell, kettlebells, dumbbells and medicine balls, specifically at the coach’s’ discretion. Many studies have shown that CrossFit KIDS age children do not get stronger from maximal loading, so even an advanced CrossFit KIDS athlete will be doing higher repetitions at lower weights, as opposed to attempting to ‘max out’ on a weighted movement.
CrossFit TEENS: CrossFit TEENS start unloaded until they can show competence with a bodyweight movement. Only then, and only at the coach’s discretions, will they start adding weight. Safety is always our first concern.
IS WORKING OUT/WEIGHTLIFTING SAFE FOR KIDS?
Yes. Improving bone density, preventing injury, and fighting the modern problems of type 2 diabetes and childhood obesity are all part of a child’s participation in CrossFit Kids. A general preparedness strength and conditioning program such as CrossFit Kids makes children stronger and more resilient to injury.
WILL MY CHILD BE ALONE WITH ANY ADULTS?
No. We have a 2-child minimum policy– If at least 2 children are not signed up, class will be cancelled. We do not offer 1-on-1 coaching for children.
HOW CAN I SIGN MY CHILD UP?
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org (use the subject line CF KIDS) with your child’s age, name, and the class they will be attending. You’ll be emailed a waiver and pickup form to fill out. (A waiver and pickup form MUST be filled out prior to your child starting class) After your child is initially registered, you can sign them up for classes through Wodify. We ask that you sign up ahead of time so that classes don’t get unnecessarily cancelled.
